RAHIM YAR KHAN, Pakistan - A man was beaten up and his nose and ears chopped for marrying a woman without her family’s consent. The incident took place on Friday, after Jameel, a resident of Basti Feeta Kata near Sadiqabad, allegedly abducted his brother-in-law, Qasim, 25, and took him to a nearby vacant dera in Ali Mardan village, where he beat him and later cut his nose and ears with the help from his accomplices Zaheer, Asif and Arif. A passer-by, who heard Qasim scream in pain, went over to investigate and found him lying in a pool of blood. The police were informed and Qasim was taken to Shaikh Zayed Hosptial, where doctors treating him said that he would likely survive. They said he had undergone a surgery and would take some four weeks to fully recover. Police said Qasim, also a resident of Basti Feeta Kata, had married Jameel’s sister, Majeeda Bibi, 21, six months ago without the approval of their families. Fearing for their lives, police said, the couple had left the village and started living in Khanpur from where they later shifted to Ahmedpur East. ROJHAN, Pakistan - Two men had their legs broken on Friday for refusing to hand over a nine-year-old girl in vani as ordered by a panchayat eight years ago. They were taken to Shaikh Khalifa Hospital, where doctors treating them said that they would take two months to recover. They said they were out of danger. Zakir Hussain, the father, and Sabir Hussain, the uncle of the girl, were beaten up by five men for refusing to honour a panchayat ruling given in 2004. The girl’s brother, Nasir Hussain, had been accused of having an illicit relationship with a woman from the neighbourhood. Besides declaring his then one-year-old sister vani, the panchayat had ordered the father, Zakir Hussain, to pay Rs25,000 fine to the woman’s family. On Friday, when the woman’s family approached Zakir Hussain to demand that the girl be wed to her brother but he refused to give her away. Woman Hangs Herself to Avoid Forced Marriage

Afghanistan - A 22-year-old girl hanged herself to death after her family engaged her to a person in an exchange marriage in the Lal Sarjangal district of western Ghor province on Wednesday, an official said. The girl identified as Ruqia killed herself at home at around 10am, a month before her marriage was fixed, the district crime branch police chief, Ma. Nazir Hussain, told Pajhwok Afghan News. A police party had been sent to the area for investigating the incident, he said, adding Ruqia was the third girl committing suicide over the past one month. “The girl was going to be married to a person whose sister had wed her brother. The marriage was being arranged against the victim’s will,” he said. Provincial council member Sadiq Yousafi said several such incidents occurred in the province over the past one month. “Most of girls commit suicide when their families force them into marrying men of parents’ choice," he said, adding of the seven girls killed over the past one year, four of them were killed by their families. Provincial human rights director, Jawad Rezayi, expressed concerns over increasing suicide cases among young girls, saying the incidents could continue to increase if the government did not address the issue. Dubai - The mystery of a disappearing eight-year old girl was solved by the Dubai Police's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) who arrested the father and his girlfriend for torturing and murdering his own daughter, according to Dubai Police Chief Dahi Khalfan Tamim. "The woman was in an extra-marital relationship with the father who buried the body of the victim in a desolate sandy area," Tamim stated. The two suspects were referred to the Dubai Prosecution and the body of the girl is now at the Criminal Evidence Department. Initial investigations into the case revealed that the father was under the effect of alcohol and was using drugs, the official explained. Sudan - (Reuters) - A Sudanese woman, believed to be around 20, has been sentenced to be stoned to death for adultery, and is being held near Khartoum, shackled in prison with her baby son, rights groups and lawyers said on Thursday. Campaigners condemned the ruling, saying it violated international standards and raised concerns that Sudan might start applying sharia, or Islamic law, more strictly following the secession of mostly non-Muslim South Sudan last year. The woman, Intisar Sharif Abdalla, was sentenced by the Ombada criminal court on April 22, court documents seen by Reuters showed. Two lawyers assigned to her case, who declined to be named, said they were launching an appeal adding Abdalla appeared to be under severe psychological strain. "She's in dire need of a psychiatrist because she appears to be in a state of shock from the social and family pressures she's under," one lawyer said. Abdalla was illiterate and did not have a lawyer or interpreter in the courtroom, although Arabic is not her native language, the lawyers and activists added. Arabic is the main language in the overwhelmingly Muslim nation, though a wide range of smaller languages are also spoken, particularly in tribal areas. It was unclear where Abdalla came from. ‘Killed for seeking divorce’: Family of murdered woman appeals for justice

SWAT, Pakistan - The family of a woman, who was abducted and murdered after filing for divorce, has accused the police of partiality and sought help from the Chief Justice of Pakistan. Tehsil Bibi of Asbanr village, Lower Dir, had filed for divorce from her mute and hearing-impaired husband, Fazal Amin, on grounds that he is impotent, her family stated at a press conference at the Swat Press Club. Her mother, father, and uncle claimed that when they were returning from the court on May 9, about 12 men of the other party blocked the road at Ponda Dheria and abducted Bibi at gunpoint. The men also shot her uncle, Bacha Rawan, in the leg and left him critically wounded. However, the family claims that when they tried to register an FIR, the Station House Officer (SHO) undermined the issue and recorded a minor case against the culprits. They alleged that even the investigation officer did not pay heed to their pleas. “The same night the SHO informed us that Bibi had been murdered,” Rawan told The Express Tribune. “When we received the body, it was mutilated: her throat was slit, she bore numerous torture marks all over and had one of her eyes gouged out,” he explained painfully. The family has blamed the police for inaction and for failing to register a case against the accused party. But the police treated him dismissively, refusing to take in complaint and reminded him of lodging complaints in the past too. Only when he pleaded that this time the threats were against his vulnerable children living in Indonesia and threatened to report the case to the interior ministry, the police reluctantly filed the complaints, but without mentioning the letters of threat against his family and children. And despite taking in the complaint, the Spanish authorities have done nothing of note, when the threats of massacring his family in Indonesia come from well-known Islamic organizations there. Sweden - A prominent Iranian researcher at Sweden’s Karolinska Instiutet is in custody for having cut off his wife’s lips with a knife and then eating them. The man attacked his much younger wife in their home south of Stockholm after flying into a jealous rage over suspicions that his wife had been unfaithful, the Aftonbladet newspaper reported. Prosecutors considered the attack to be so vicious that they requested the man be remanded in custody on suspicion of attempted murder. During a remand hearing, however, the court ruled the suspicions should be classified as aggravated assault and ordered the man held on remand pending the filing of formal charges. ‘Imam’ thrown into prison for murdering wife

India - A young Imam has been put behind bars on the charge of killing his second wife. Shaik Ayub alias Abdulrahman, of Dharmabad in Adilabad district, allegedly killed Yasmeen Begum by strangulating her in bed a few days ago. She was barely 24 years old and the couple had been married for only nine months. The incident came as a shocker for the village and people gathered in large numbers demanding that the Imam be sentenced to death, as he had defamed the community and holy script. The sarpanch and others plan to boycott the family for such an inhuman act. The reason for the crime is said to be dowry. Yasmeen who father Shaikh Babu, a daily wage labourer and father of six daughters, could not meet the Imam’s dowry demands. It is alleged that Ayub had been demanding five grams of gold and Rs10,000 in cash immediately. Knowing her father’s financial position, Yasmeen repeatedly pleaded with Ayub that her father could not afford to meet his demands. A heated argument ensued which resulted in Ayub beating up Yasmeen. Last week, Ayub beat up Yasmeen and eventually strangled her to death. Following this, his family and he informed her parents that she had died of an electric shock, said deputy superintendent of police BN Devidas.
